ARIYALPUR: The Highways department has taken up maintenance work on a war-footing on a 110-km stretch between Tiruchirappalli and Ariyalur, hub of cement Industry.

Highways officials said maintenance of the highways in the state was going on after a long gap.

For the purpose of maintaining quality and better monitoring, authorities had divided various stretches into segments.

According to information available from the department relaying of Tiruchi-Meensuruti section, part of Tiruchi-Ariyalur Highway, was going on.

The stretch linking important places, including Lalgudi, Pullambadi and T.Pazhur, played a major role in transporting raw materials for cement factories as well as finished product, a cement factory official Kalaivanan said.

There was also a plan to convert the Tiruchi-Ariyalur sector into four lane highway,and process of acquiring lands would begin shortly. A separate wing would take care of land acquisition process, officials said.
