NEW DELHI: The government will consider tomorrow 15 new proposals for Special Economic Zones, including 11 IT and electronic hardware projects.

The Board of Approval for SEZ, chaired by Commerce Secretary Gopal Pillai, would take up proposals of Larsen and Toubro (L&T) and Deccan Infrastructure and Land Holdings among others.

Listed on the agenda are six IT and ITeS zones by Deccan Infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh, totalling an area of 114 hectares. L&T's proposal for a 15-hectare IT zone in Gujarat would also come up for approval.

The BoA would further consider conversion to formal approval, the in-principle nod to SEZ proposals of Gremach Infrastructure Equipments and Projects, Maharashtra Industrial Development Co-operation (MIDC) and Essel Infraprojects in Maharashtra.

The government has so far given formal approval to 428 SEZs, of which 222 have been notified. Direct employment in the notified zones was 97,993 as on March 2008.

Exports from the tax-free enclaves clocked a 92 per cent growth in 2007-08 and stood at Rs 66,638 crore.
