NEW DELHI: The Centre on Tuesday said all metro train projects in the future will be funded through public-private partnership, in which the Union Government will provide up to 20 per cent viability.
"The Delhi metro project is being built through a special purpose vehicle, but after the successful beginning of Mumbai Rail Transit system, we have decided that all such metro projects in future will be implemented through PPP model," Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy said.
Speaking at the international conference on infrastructure by the World Bank, he said, "the first phase of the Mumbai metro has been given to the private bidder and bids would be soon called for the second phase of the project."
Reddy said the bids would be finalised for Hyderabad metro project through PPP model. The Centre is providing up to 20 per cent viability gap funding for such projects. In addition, the states can also provide financial support to these projects, but they will have to invite competitive bids in a transparent manner, he said.
The minister also said that the government has also decided to develop slums in Delhi through the PPP model, which will offer multi-story housing to the poor sections and sale of portion of land for commercial purposes.
