Govt expands road project in NE
The government on Monday approved expansion of a project to build roads in the north-eastern region, besides clearing additional expenditure under a scheme to improve industrial infrastructure in the country.
"The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs gave approval to incur additional expenditure of Rs 277 crore over and above Rs 675 crore under IIUS (Industrial Infrastructure Up-gradation Scheme) for the ongoing projects," an official release said.
The CCEA also cleared taking up six new projects for industrial clusters located in industrially less developed states. "The provision of crucial physical infrastructure in clusters/industrial locations will enhance the competitiveness of Indian industry," the release said.
The IIUS was launched in 2003 to enhance competitiveness of industry by providing quality infrastructure through public-private-partnership in select industrial clusters.
So far, 26 projects entailing a central grant of Rs 952.10 crore have been sanctioned under the scheme. Till March 3, 2007, a sum of Rs 579.10 crore has been released as central grant to various Special Purpose Vehicles and the contribution of SPVs has been Rs 338 crore so far, it added.
In another decision, CCEA agreed to expand the scope of the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme for North- Eastern Region by including an additional 994 km of roads in first phase, entailing an investment of Rs 4,673 crore.
The programme would now cover 2,304 km under Phase 'A', which is targeted to be completed by 2012-13. The Phase 'B' would cover a total of 6,433 km roads and is scheduled to be completed by 2015-16.
