NEW DELHI: The government has approved six projects entailing a cost of Rs 373.35 crore under the Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation Scheme (IIUS), including an industrial cluster at Chhindwara, the constituency of Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath.

The other projects include an engineering cluster in Maharashtra, ready-made garments and handloom cluster in Madhya Pradesh, auto cluster at Jharkhand and industrial cluster in Uttar Pradesh. These would be given a central grant of Rs 247.8 crore, an official release on Thursday.

The approval was given at a meeting of the IIUS chaired by Nath here. The projects, to be executed by Special Purpose Vehicles by involving local industry associations, are aimed at improving competitiveness of clusters by providing infrastructure, training centre, weavers' workstation, display and R&D centre and hazardous waste management facilities.

So far, 26 projects with total cost of Rs 1,766.18 crore, involving central grant of Rs 952.1 crore have been sanctioned under IIUS. However, 18 out of these are in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
"In order to correct this skewed pattern of sanction, the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion obtained the approval of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs for sanctioning six additional projects in industrially less developed states," the release said.

Of the other projects, five are nearing completion. Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd is conducting a critical evaluation of the scheme. The projects would enhance exports, physical integration with backward and forward linkages, product quality, production and market size.
