Government plans to set up tech park for medical devices in Gujarat

NEW DELHI: The Centre is considering setting up an exclusive tech park for medical devices in Gujarat, which has been a leading pharmaceutical producer in the country, Fertiliser Minister Ananth Kumar said today.

In a meeting with Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel today, Kumar discussed various projects relating to the state in the fields of chemicals, fertilisers and pharmaceuticals.

It was decided that a joint working group of officials of the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers and the State Government will be formed to take forward various projects that are in the pipeline, according to an official statement.

Gujarat had been a leading pharmaceutical producer and further steps are to be taken to expand the industry in this sector. It could also be explored for setting up of an exclusive Tech Park for medical devices, the statement said.

The other projects which were deliberated including setting up of a full-fledged campus for the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education & Research ( NIPER) at Ahmadabad, further develop the Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemicals Investments Region ( PCPIR) at Dahej, where the ONGC Petro Additions Ltd (OPaL) is already setting up a plant.

Besides, the two leaders also discussed about setting up of a fertiliser plant in the state under the new investment policy.

State-run Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd ( GSFC) and Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd (GNFC) have already applied for setting up of urea plant under the new policy.
