'Golden Quadrilateral road project will cover 6,500 km'

The Golden Quadrilateral road project will now cover 6,500 kms as against the earlier plan of 5,846 kms, says Union Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways K H Muniyappa.

PANAJI: The ambitious Golden Quadrilateral road project will now cover 6,500 kms as against the earlier plan of 5,846 kms, Union Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways K H Muniyappa said here.

"The Golden Quadrilateral connecting various cities will be covering 6,500 kms and will be a six lane project," the minister, who was down in Goa to address Hindi Salahkar Samiti meeting, told reporters in south Goa.

He said the UPA government has taken up completion of this project on priority as it will provide better and easy connectivity to various cities.

The minister said the Centre has launched a programme for road construction of total 66,500 kms of national highways "of this, 50,000 kms will be developed by 2015 into eight lanes, six lanes and four lanes," he said.

The ministry intends to have 1,000 km length into expressway and 20,000 kms in the two-lane with pave shoulders.

He said that the National Highways Development Project (NHDP) is being implemented in seven phases with an estimated investment of around Rs 2,27,000 crore over the period of 2005-2012.

Muniyappa, who met Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat along with Member of Parliament Fransisco Sardinha, during his Goa visit, said that the national highways running through the state would be taken up for four laning.

He also assured a parallel bridge on Zuari river connecting north and south districts of the state.

"Feasibility study of four laning of NH-17 is in progress and is scheduled to be completed by June 2008," the minister stated.
