Goa govt to write Centre again to denotify three SEZs

PANAJI: Goa government has almost cornered Special Economic Zones (SEZ) promoters although they have withdrawn the stop work order issued to these industrial enclaves.
While on one hand, the state government has withdrawn the stop work orders issued to three notified SEZs, the state- owned Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) has revoked the land allotted to these zones.
This leaves the SEZ promoters with the permission to have zones but without the allotted land to do so.
"We withdrew the stop work order because we had to file an affidavit in the High Court," Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat said.
The state withdrew stop work order this week responding to the petition filed by K Raheja Corporation.
Kamat said that the state will be again writing to the Centre to denotify three SEZs--K Raheja Corporation, Peninsula Pharma Research Centre and Meditab Specialities Pvt Ltd. "If required, we will review SEZ-2006 policy" he said.
The Union Commerce Ministry had expressed its inability to denotify three SEZs saying that the state government should initiate dialogues with the promoters.
The SEZ promoters, who are facing tough time with the state government, got another blow this month when state owned Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) revoked land allotted to them.
GIDC had allotted 38 lakh square metres of land to seven SEZ promoters -- including three notified ones -- in Sancoale, Verna and Keri villages.
While on one hand, the state government has withdrawn the stop work orders issued to three notified SEZs, the state- owned Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) has revoked the land allotted to these zones.
This leaves the SEZ promoters with the permission to have zones but without the allotted land to do so.
