Foundation stone for 'Smartcity Kochi' laid
Kerala Chief Minister V S Achutanandan laid the foundation stone for the Rs 1,700 crore 'smartcity Kochi' project, a joint venture between the Kerala Government and Dubai's TECOM Investments.

KOCHI: Kerala Chief Minister V S Achutanandan on Friday laid the foundation stone for the Rs 1,700 crore 'smartcity Kochi' project, a joint venture between the Kerala Government and Dubai's TECOM Investments.
The project aims to build a self-sustained industry township that includes world class infrastructure, environment and support systems necessary for the growth of the state's knowledge-based industry, he said while laying the foundation stone for the project at nearby Edachira.
Achuthanandan said that Kochi, the commercial hub of Kerala, needs to improve upon its infrastructure facilities. The city faces severe traffic congestion and inadequate garbage disposal facilities. "In another three years, the city will witness further development, which will further increase the problems," he said.
The government had received several proposals to provide better infrastructure facilities in Kochi. "Sky City and Metro Railway proposals are among those pending before the Government," he said.
With the potential to create 90,000 jobs, Smartcity Kochi is expected to have a significant impact on the local economy, offering multiple benefits, he said.
"The foundation stone ceremony is a significant occasion in the economic transformation of Kerala," he said.
Tecom Investments Executive Director Fareed Abdul Rehman also took part in the ceremony. Chairman of TECOM and SmartCity, Dubai, Ahmed Bin Byat, who was to participate in the function, could not make it and his speech was read out by Rehman.
