Defence Industrial Park in Kerala
Kerala plans to set up a Defence Industrial Park exclusively for manufacturing defence products, state Industries minister, Elamaram Kareem said on Friday.
The three locations, where the park could come up are Palakkad, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram, the minister said. While the government had about 200 acres of land at Palakkad, it would have to acquire land in Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram. A consultant would be appointed to undertake a feasiblity study of the project and the location.
State-owned PSUs and private industries from the state and outside were welcome to set up their units in the proposed park, the minister said at the valedictory function of a two-day Defence-Industry seminar here.
"Those interested should come forward to make use of the opportunity", he said.
The government had also decided to handover the state-owned Kerala HiTech Industries Ltd (KELTEC) to the Defence Research and Development Organsiation(DRDO). The formalities on the takeover were going on, he said.
Kerala's share in producing various products and components for the defence sector was only 0.1 per cent, he said.
