Centre sanctions Rs 80 cr to Karnataka for repairing highways

Centre has released Rs 80 crore to Karnataka for taking up repair works on national highways, Union Minister for National Highways K H Muniyappa said on Wednesday.

HUBLI: Centre has released Rs 80 crore to Karnataka for taking up repair works on national highways, Union Minister for National Highways K H Muniyappa said on Wednesday.

Karnataka has sent 23 proposals, seeking Rs 80 crore for maintenance of national highways and all of them have been approved, he told a press conference here.

Muniyappa attributed "overloading" by iron ore lorries for the bad condition of national highways and warned that hefty fines would be slapped against those resorting to it.

To ease traffic congestion on Hubli-Dharwad route, the Centre has decided to approve a outer ring road to connect three national highways from Hubli-Bijapur (NH 218), Ankola-Gutti (NH 234) and Mumbai-Bangalore (NH-4).

On the on-going protest by a section of people alleging "injustice" towards Kannadigas in Railway recruitment, Muniyappa said he would write to Railways Minister Lalu Prasad in this regard.

Muniyappa, who hails from Karnataka, claimed Congress would return to power in the state and people would reject BJP and JDS in the assembly polls as they had not provided good governance earlier.
