BUPC to oppose chemical hub in Nayachar

The Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee (BUPC), which thwarted the West Bengal government's move to acquire land for a chemical hub in Nandigram.

NANDIGRAM: The Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee (BUPC), which thwarted the West Bengal government's move to acquire land for a chemical hub in Nandigram, on Monday said it would launch fresh agitation against any attempt to set up the hub in the nearby Nayachar island.

"The proposed chemical hub at Nayachar will pollute the rivers and endanger the ecology," BUPC leader and Trinamool Congress MLA Subhendu Adhikary told a farmers rally here.

"The government might again try to forcibly acquire farmland for its ship repair project in nearby Suhata and Mahishadal villages," he said, and appealed to the farmers not to allow the project to be set up in the locality.

He suggested that the Jellingham factory, which is now closed, in the area could be used for the proposed ship repairing project.

Adhikary alleged that the state government had not yet paid compensation to the rape victims and injured during the March 14 police firing in Nandigram last year despite an order of the Calcutta High Court.

The rally preceded a candle light procession to observe the first death anniversary of three peasants who died during the violence on Jan 7, last year.

Several intellectuals, including Magsaysay award winner Mahasweta Devi, also participated in the procession.
