BoA to take up 15 SEZ proposals at meeting on Friday
The government will take up on Friday 15 more proposals for setting up special economic zones, with the maximum number of fresh cases coming from the IT sector seeking continuance of tax sops beyond 2009.
The Board of Approval (BoA), headed by Commerce Secretary G K Pillai, will consider 15 proposals, of which 11 are for IT and ITeS zones and include those of TCS, DLF, Unitech Hitech and Blue Vision Constructions.
Four proposals for IT and ITeS zones in Uttar Pradesh are on the BoA's agenda. The projects were earlier deferred since they did not have land in possession.
After the change of government in Uttar Pradesh early this year, the number of proposals from the state had slowed down as Chief Minister Mayawati had sought inquiry in many cases.
All the proposals from UP belong to the IT and ITeS sector and are located in Noida near in the NCR region. They are Perfect IT SEZ Pvt Ltd, Aachvis Softech, DLF Commercial Developers and Unitech Hi-tech Projects.
The SEZ scheme under which several tax incentives are extended for 15 years has come in as an alternative for IT firms to the existing benefits under the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) scheme which will expire in March 2009.
Other projects listed for BoA's approval include a TCS project in Kolkata.
The Government has so far given formal approval to 386 proposals of which over 149 have been notified.
