BoA meets tomorrow to take up 40 SEZ proposals

Within a week of clearing 29 special economic zones, the Board of Approval in the Commerce Ministry will meet tomorrow to take up 40 proposals, including those of GMR Hyderabad International Airport and Wipro.

NEW DELHI: Within a week of clearing 29 special economic zones, the Board of Approval in the Commerce Ministry will meet tomorrow to take up 40 proposals, including those of GMR Hyderabad International Airport and Wipro.

Of these 40 proposals, 29 already have land in possession, official sources said.

While MIDC has four proposals for zones totaling over 460 hectares, GMR has proposed a 101.2 hectare airport-based multi-product SEZ in Andhra Pradesh. Wipro is awaiting a nod for its 40.46 hectare IT SEZ to come up at Hyderabad.

The BoA had on May 31 given formal approval to 23 SEZs and in-principle clearance to six others.

It had, however, deferred a decision on Mukesh Ambani-promoted Navi Mumbai SEZ following objections from the Revenue Department. The matter is expected to come up again at the Board's next meeting on June 22.

Other proposals that would come up for consideration tomorrow are two zones by Gitanjali Gems in Maharashtra, Mansarovar Industrial Development Corporation's 130.73 hectare handicraft zone in Rajasthan and PSL Ltd's 105.67 hectare zone for alternative energy and energy ancillaries in Gujarat.
