BJP initiates public campaign against SEZs in Goa
Goa will join movements in many other states in opposing special economic zones (SEZs) in the state with the opposition Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) initiating a public campaign against the SEZs.
"Goa has the limited land resource which needs to be used judiciously. The state cannot go on lending its precious earth to SEZs which will further burden the state infrastructure," leader of opposition Manohar Parrikar said.
With the forthcoming Lok Sabha by-poll in South Goa constituency, the BJP has taken up the opportunity to raise the issue against the Congress-led state government.
The party has already started its public awareness campaign which was kicked off from South Goa on October five and will be spread to the entire state within a fortnight. Educating people on the SEZs, the party has decided to distribute pamphlets by visiting every house.
Goa, which is currently having 50 MW power shortage during peak hours, will have to further stretch its power requirement with the SEZs. The state government has given consent for fifteen SEZs, of which two are already functional. Rest are awaiting nod from the centre.
"How can government just pass these SEZs without studying their impact on infrastructure?," questioned Damodar Naik, a legislator, who is one amongst the leaders heading the campaign.
BJP leaders have calculated that estimated power requirement for 15 SEZs is 350 MW, water requirement is 40 MLD and employment generated will be 3.12 lakhs.
