Bengaluru's second airport coming soon: Four locations, plans, date and details

Karnataka Infrastructure Minister MB Patil has announced plans to convene a meeting soon to determine the location of Bengaluru’s proposed second airport. This decision is crucial and will be guided by considerations of passenger load and connectivity to the existing Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

The current exclusivity clause with Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), which restricts the establishment of another airport within a 150-kilometer radius, is set to expire in 2032, potentially opening opportunities for a new airport by 2033.

Patil highlighted potential locations such as Sarjapur and Kanakapura Road for their high passenger load potential, while areas like Tumakuru and Dabaspet are favored for their strategic connectivity to KIA.

The selection process for the second airport will primarily focus on two main criteria: passenger demand and connectivity to KIA. The decision-making process for Bengaluru's second airport involves comprehensive discussions in upcoming departmental meetings

The proposal for a second international airport in Bengaluru has sparked lobbying among Congress MLAs. Legislators representing constituencies around the city are advocating for the new airport to be situated in their respective areas. Notable voices include Home Minister G Parameshwara, who supports locations in Tumakuru district, and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who favors Bidadi or Harohalli industrial area. Magadi MLA HC Balakrishna has also proposed various locations, emphasizing economic benefits and regional development.
