The West Bengal Government has earmarked Rs 1,500 crore for projects under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund during the current financial year with the assistance of NABARD.

KOLKATA: The West Bengal Government has earmarked Rs 1,500 crore for projects under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund during the current financial year with the assistance of NABARD.
Last fiscal the state government had earmarked Rs 600 crore for the purpose but could spend only 451 crore, state finance minister Asim Dasgupta said after a meeting with finance secretary Samar Ghosh, NABARD's chief general manager in charge of the state P Mohanaia and other top officials.
"We must ensure that maximum fund is used within the financial year and maximum work is done for the development of rural infrastructure," the minister said.
While 85 per cent of the total projection would be taken from the NABARD as loan, the rest 15 per cent would be contributed by the state government, he said.
Dasgupta said that priority would be accorded to the departments of agriculture, self-employment programmes, rural roads, irrigation, rural electrification, cottage and small scale industries and technical education during the year.
All departments concerned have been asked to submit detailed plans by June and start work immediately after, he said.
The minister hoped that various development projects under the scheme would generate about eight lakh employment in the state during the year.
