Assocham asks Goa govt to allow SEZs

Industry body Assocham on Friday asked the Goa government not to ban special economic zones (SEZs) in the state and allow non-polluting industries to come up in these tax-free trade enclaves.

PANAJI: Industry body Assocham on Friday asked the Goa government not to ban special economic zones (SEZs) in the state and allow non-polluting industries to come up in these tax-free trade enclaves.

The SEZs can come up on non-government land, it said. The state government should not ban SEZs as it would send a wrong signal across the country. But at the same time it should not allow exploitation of government land and people in the name of SEZs, Assocham President Venugopal Dhoot said.

An Assocham delegation later met Chief Minister Digamber Kamat and submitted suggestions, which could be incorporated in the government's SEZ policy.

The Kamat Government had scrapped nearly half a dozen SEZ proposals in the tourist states in January in the face of stiff opposition from various quarters.
