AHMEDABAD: Even as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) plans a Rs 291 crore new international terminal at the Ahmedabad airport, it looks to improve existing infrastructure facilities.
AAI wants to expand the existing international terminal building at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. On Saturday, AAI officials visited the airport to examine the feasibility of upgradation of the international terminal building.
At present, the building can accommodate about 500 passengers at a time. Passenger traffic in peak hours is much higher than the capacity. “The expansion will be a make-shift arrangement to ease out the traffic at the airport,” SD Avasthi, airport director said. The expansion will include apt utilisation of existing space at the building and will increase passenger handling capacity.
In addition to the existing international terminal, the proposed new airport terminal which has got the centre’s nod will be able to handle over three times its existing capacity. The total capacity on completion of the new international terminal will cross 1,700 passengers (in all) as against just 500 passengers at present. The new international terminal may be operational in three years.
The AAI wants to ensure required upgradation of international building at minimal cost. If the project takes off as planned, the infrastructure at the international building will be upgraded with realignment of counters. The traffic pattern will be improved and the unused floor area will also be utilised. However, the expansion is not intended to increase the flight handling capacity as the new international building may take care of that requirement later.
