Officials said govt has started preliminary works for laying of tram network besides carrying out several development projects in the Old Delhi area.

NEW DELHI: As part of its efforts to augment transport infrastructure, the AAP government today has decided to run trams in several walled city areas including Lal Quila, Jama Masjid and Old Delhi Railway Station.

Officials said government has started preliminary works for laying of tram network besides carrying out several development projects in the Old Delhi area.

They said the tram network will also link New Delhi Railway Station and several other localities.

Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Development Minister Manish Sisodia and a number of senior officials took a round of several areas in Old Delhi including Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, Sheeshganj Gurudwara, Old Delhi Railway Station and Fatehpuri Masjid to asses infrastructural requirements.

Officials said the Government has decided to make Shahjahanad Redevelopment Corporation, set up to carry out infrastructure projects in Old Delhi, on the lines of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).

The Government also has decided to give enforcement powers to the body.

"To implement its plans the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation will need proper powers, so we will be equipping it with powers for enforcement," said Sisodia.

He said Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation till now has only planned certain projects and has not been doing anything concrete.
