Truck Strike hits business worth Rs 600 crore in Coimbatore
The truckers strike which entered the seventh day has hit garment and coconut products business worth Rs 600 crores in the district, industry sources said.
According to a rough estimate, knitwear and garments valued at Rs 400 crore booked for various domestic and international markets were lying in the factories at the neighbouring hosiery town of Tirupur industry sources said.
Grey fabrics valued at over Rs 80 crore were lying in godowns in nearby Avanashi and Somanur and powerloom operators were pinning their hopes on the government to find a solution to end the truckers' strike.
Coconut and related products, like copra and oil stocks to different markets in Tamil Nadu and to the markets in other states were piling up in Pollachi, Udumalpet and Kinathukadavu in the district, market sources said.
Besides the business loss of nearly Rs 100 crore, about one lakh workers, depending on the sector, were sitting idle, since there was no job due to the strike, the sources said.
Despatch of tea from Valparai had also been hit by the strike, the sources added.
