Tourism contributes 5.83 pc to total GDP
Tourism has contributed about 5.83 per cent to total Gross Domestic Product and 8.27 per cent to total employment in 2002-03.

NEW DELHI: Tourism has contributed about 5.83 per cent to total Gross Domestic Product and 8.27 per cent to total employment in 2002-03, according to Tourism Satellite Account of India, Lok Sabha was informed.
In a written reply, the Minister of Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni said the ministry extends financial assistance to states for development of tourist circuits and destinations, including rural tourism and eco-tourism.
In another reply, the minister said the foreign exchange earned through tourism in country contributed about 3.37, 3.06 and 2.80 per cent of total foreign exchange received in the country during 2004, 2005 and 2006.
To another question, the minister replied that total revenue collected from 116 ticketed monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India during the last three years is Rs 5285.72 lakh, Rs 5466.63 lakh and 6303.63 lakh.
