NEW DELHI: Calling for effective monitoring of the implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) in 330 districts of the country where it is under implementation since 2006, Union Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh on Thursday stressed the need for third party monitoring of the programme.

Addressing the valedictory session of a workshop of the National Level Monitors (NLMs) here, Singh said that transparency and awareness in implementation of the programme was of utmost importance.

He called upon NLMs to give their independent views on the quality of durable assets created by villagers under NREGA, and how it impacted their lives.

The ministry has engaged 260 NLMs for special monitoring of NREGA in all the 330 districts. These NLMs are retired defence and civil servants with adequate experience in administration of developmental works.

They are supposed to visit all these 330 districts during May-June 2008 and submit reports regarding status of implementation of NREGA by June 15, 2008.

NREGA from April 1, 2008 is being implemented throughout the country and provides legal guarantee of 100 days of unskilled wage employment in a year to willing rural households.
