Shortage due to increase in consumption, reduced central supply

Power shortage in Tamil Nadu is due to manifold increase in domestic consumption, non-availability of power from wind farms and reduced supply from the central pool, State Electricity Minister N Veeraswamy said here.

CHENNAI: Power shortage in Tamil Nadu is due to manifold increase in domestic consumption, non-availability of power from wind farms and reduced supply from the central pool, State Electricity Minister N Veeraswamy said here.

The power shortage is only temporary and steps have been taken to avoid power cuts in the summer by wheeling power from Assam, Haryana and Kerala, he said in a statement.

Referring to a demand from the actor-turned-politician R Sarathkumar, who wanted the government to come out with a statement on the power situation in the state,he said power consumption by the domestic sector had gone up by ten times.

In fact, the people in Tamil Nadu consumed 18 per cent more power this year as compared to last year, he said adding the state did not get 1500 MW of power from wind mills from October last and there was shortage of 1000 mw from the central pool.

Alleging that the previous AIADMK government did not take any steps to generate more power, he said "the demand for power in the state is increasing by 700 mw per year."
