'Reforms harm public sector banks'

Banking sector reforms being pushed by the UPA Government would seriously harm the public sector banks and make their services inaccessible to masses, CPI-M leader A Vijayaraghavan, MP, said on Saturday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Banking sector reforms being pushed by the UPA Government would seriously harm the public sector banks and make their services inaccessible to masses, CPI-M leader A Vijayaraghavan, MP, said on Saturday.

Addressing a dharna organised by the State Bank of India (SBI) Staff Union here, Vijayaraghavan said the argument that creation of big banks through amalgamation of public sector banks would seriously dent the benefit of banking services to masses, especially in the rural areas.

The union leaders demanded steps to fill vacancies in the clerical and subordinate categories in the SBI to ensure better service to customers.

SBI Staff Union (Kerala circle) president K Raja Kurup and general secretary John Joseph addressed the dharna.
