NEW DELHI: India's seafood export, which was stagnating till a few years ago, has the potential to touch 3.5 billion dollars by 2009 provided thrust is given to value-addition, expansion of aquaculture and technological upgradation, industry body Assocham said on Friday.

Country's seafood export stood at 1.6 billion dollars in 2005-06 and is likely to be 2.2 billion dollars in 2007-08.

The export can grow further in view of the growing demand for marine products in the EU, Middle East, China, Canada, Tunisia, Puerto Rico, Russia, the chamber said.

During 2006-07, India exported 6,12,641 tons of marine products, valued at 1.85 billion dollars. Frozen shrimp was the largest export item (54 per cent in value), followed by frozen fish (17 per cent), cuttlefish (10 per cent), squid (7 per cent) and dried items (2 per cent).

"MPEDA needs to be made financially stronger through central allocations so that sea exporters get adequate fiscal assistance from this institution. Poor financial assistance to the exporters is one of the main reasons for India's poor export performance," Assocham President Venugopal Dhoot said.

Financial assistance extended by MPEDA to marine product exporters has declined from Rs 784.01 lakh to 735.83 lakh in the last 3-4 years and was Rs 607.91 lakh in March 2006, adversely impacting seafood exports.

Major markets for Indian seafood are the EU, the US, Japan and the Middle East. While export to Canada, Tunisia, Puerto Rico, Russia, Fuji Island and Bangladesh showed a positive growth, shipments to the US, Mexico, Cyprus, Australia and Maldives declined.

States of Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Gujarat and Orissa have huge potential in marine products and the same needs to be harnessed to enhance the exports, the chamber said.
