India's industrial output slowed to 2.7 per cent year-on-year in April as against revised 3.9 per cent in March, data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) showed on Wednesday.

Economists polled by Reuters were expecting a growth of 1%.

Manufacturing output, which carries the largest weight in the index, advanced 3.4 per cent in April as against 3 per cent in the previous month, while electricity generation decreased to 1.1 per cent from 6.3 per cent in March.


Mining activity contracted by 0.2 per cent in April from an expansion of 0.4 per cent a month ago.

In April, the output of consumer durables, including items like cars and phones, increased by 6.4 per cent. In contrast, the output of consumer non-durables, such as food products and toiletries, declined by 1.7 per cent, indicating softer consumption in essential goods.

The factory output, measured in terms of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), rose by 5.2 per cent in April 2024, the data showed.
