India posts record food grain production in '08 crop year
India is estimated to have produced a record 227.32 million tons of food grains, including 76.78 million tons of wheat during 2007-08 crop year.
The increase in output, which is 10 million tons (MT) more than what was produced last year, is due to factors such as even rainfall distribution and favourable temperature during Rabi season, Agriculture Secretary P K Mishra told reporters here today, while releasing the third advance crop estimate.
According to the government estimate for this crop year (June-May), farmers have produced a record 76.78 MT of wheat this year compared to 75.81 MT in 2006-07. The previous highest production of 76.36 MT wheat was recorded in 1999-2000.
Other crops which saw a record harvest in 2007-08 include rice, maize, tur, urad, soyabean and cotton, Mishra said.
Rice production is estimated at 95.68 MT, up by 2 MT over last year while coarse cereals like maize, bajra and jowar have increased to 39.67 MT from 33.92 MT.
Pulses production has also reached an all time high of 15.19 MT this year, Mishra said attributing the rise to government's schemes like National Food Security Mission (NFSM) and Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana.
He said quality seeds provided under the NFSM scheme led to an increase in production of pulses by 29 per cent in Rajasthan and 400 per cent in Chhatisgarh.
The overall oilseeds production touched a record high, the agriculture secretary expressed concern over falling output of mustard.
