India and the European Union will upgrade their science and technology cooperation and give their first co-ordinated call for research proposals at the annual summit on Friday.

NEW DELHI: India and the European Union will upgrade their science and technology cooperation and give their first co-ordinated call for research proposals at the annual summit on Friday.

Scientists from both the sides have decided to work jointly towards a common identified goal of developing high performance ceramics, structured composites and advanced materials capable of performing multiple roles.

It is the first ever co-ordinated call for research proposals in the field of computational materials science, Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the European Commission Daniele Smadja told reporters here.

The two sides have also agreed to launch studies in the energy sector covering area including fusion energy, coals, renovation and modernisation of thermal power plants, biofuels and carbon capturing and storage.

A new science and technology agreement will be signed at the Friday summit meeting of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates, representing the presidency of the European Union.
