India demands BD100 per month for unskilled workers

India has demanded a monthly pay of Rs 10,000 for all unskilled workers in Bahrain, including those engaged in the construction sector.

DUBAI: India has demanded a pay of BD100 (Rs 10,000) a month for all unskilled workers in Bahrain, including those engaged in the construction sector.

The move will stop workers leaving India for Bahrain unless they have contracts attested by the Indian Embassy, from March 1.

The minimum wage will apply to workers already here when their current contracts expire.

India is fixing minimum wages for each Gulf country depending on the cost of living.

Indian Ambassador Balkrishna Shetty said the move will protect workers from exploitation, inflation and the rising value of the rupee.

"Employers in Bahrain have already fallen in line with the BD100 minimum wage for Indian maids, implemented last October," Shetty said.

Thousands of construction workers have been complaining of exploitation by profiteering companies, as well as being hit by inflation and the soaring rupee, he said.

"Our recommendation to fix a minimum wage of BD100 to all unskilled workers has been accepted by the Overseas Indian Affairs Ministry. If the employers fail to pay the minimum wage set by the government, we shall hold the recruiting agent responsible," Shetty was quoted as saying by local media.

Meanwhile, the Bahrain Human Rights Watch Society has suggested a minimum monthly wage of BD150 to BD200 for all unskilled workers. The move came following a two-day strike by around 750 workers at Almoayyed Contracting, one of Bahrain's biggest contracting companies.
