One-third of all commodities for which the Department of Consumer Affairs compiles daily retail prices at markets across the country have seen an inflation of more than 6% since one year ago.

Onion is the worst hit, with prices up by 63%, followed by sugar (up 41%).

Edible oils and eggs are also seeing higher prices. Demand for most commodities is elevated amid the onset of the festival season, even as poor monsoon rainfall and the second-order effects of the West Asia crisis continue to add pressure.
