Global foodgrains output may surge marginally in 2008-09
Total foodgrains production is projected to surge to 1,694 million tons during 2008-09, as against 1,662 million tons in the last year.
"Despite very high prices, the total grain area is unlikely to increase because of strong competition from oilseeds and other crops," an IGC Grain Report said.
Total foodgrains production is projected to surge to 1,694 million tons during 2008-09, as against 1,662 million tons in the last year, it said.
While on yield levels, the report said, "Growing conditions in the northern hemisphere have been reasonable so far and, with average weather from now on, yields should increase in several key producers".
IGC, a London-based international organisation which plays an important role in stabilising global grains market, has projected wheat and maize production for 2008-09.
It pegged global wheat production at 646 million tons, up by 6.95 per cent from the previous year and added "global wheat plantings are fore casted to expand by 2.5 per cent, with large scale production in countries like the US, the European Union and Canada".
It further noted, "Wheat production should recover strongly but use will also increase."
As far as maize is concerned, its production is expected to fall by 20 million tons to 748 million tons, it said.
