Global agencies show interest in Bihar growth

Global financing agencies show their keenness to extend financial assistance in road construction, power, health, tourism and rural development sectors.

PATNA: 'Improved' investment climate coupled with thrust laid by the NDA government in Bihar on reforms and good governance seems to be bearing fruits with global financing agencies showing their keenness to extend financial assistance in road construction, power, health, tourism and rural development sectors.

Bihar rural livelihood development project, Bihar panchayat strengthening project, Bihar road investment programme, power, health, governance and urban development sector figured at the top in the agenda of the World Bank (WB), Asian Development Bank (ADB), UK-based Department of International Development (DFID) and Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC).

The heads of these global agencies had their first joint meeting in Bihar in the presence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar here on January 13 where they agreed in principle to extend full financial help to the state government in these sectors.

According to Kumar, each of the 8712 gram panchayats in the state required Rs 35 lakh to Rs 40 lakh for construction of a state secretariat-like secretariat building.

A whopping Rs 3,000 crore was estimated to be spent for construction of these buildings, which would be tremor proof and would have enough space to shelter those affected by floods.

A delegation of joint international development partners groups having representatives from World Bank, ADB, DFID and JBIC had already submitted a concept report on the joint approach of the international development partners for the state to Kumar.
