Food inflation still very high
Inflation may have moved into negative territory, but Delhiites are still shelling out a lot for food.
In the past week, prices of green vegetables have gone up by Rs 3-5 /kg on an average. Due to rains in Shimla two weeks ago, the cauliflower and bean crops have been destroyed due to which Delhi is getting little supply. Earlier we were getting about 30 truckloads of cauliflower . After the rains, it has come down to 10-12 . Prices accordingly have doubled in the past few days. From Rs 15/kg, it is now going for Rs 30-32 /kg, said Jaikisen, a trader in Azadpur Mandi.
The worst affected are green vegetables. The intense heat in north India has affected the flowering of the plants. The supply is really low at present and the change in prices has become very apparent in the past week or so, said another dealer. Price of onion, however, has remained stable over the past month or so, selling for Rs 6/kg.
Prices of pulses have also gone up in the past fortnight. Retailers reported that packaged tea, for instance , has become dearer by about Rs 3-5 /kg and the price of the next consignment was expected to be higher.
A lot of pulses have become expensive and the prices are being expected to go up even more in the next few weeks, said Ajay Kumar, owner of a kirana store in Patparganj .
Mandi representatives said there was an import shortage because of which prices had been going up but several grains had also become cheaper.
Delhiites, meanwhile, refuse to buy the negative inflation theory, complaining that their pockets seem much lighter of late. Prices of all essential commodities have been going up.
Most food items are more expensive and it hardly seems to be an issue with the government. Who are they trying to fool with these negative inflation figures? asked Arti Pradhan, a banker.
