A liberal external borrowings regime, spurred by the need to attract foreign exchange to meet record high current account deficit, has increased India's exposure to the global financial system.

A finance ministry report on the state of external debt at the end of 2011-12 shows a 13% rise in foreign debt stock and deterioration in most of the indicators used to judge sustainability of external debt. ET takes a look:
