Exchequer saves Rs 10 cr as ministers go on fewer tours
The government has saved nearly one-tenth of the amount it allocated for tours of union ministers during 2006-07 as they went on fewer trips during the period.
Lesser mobility of union ministers as also unclaimed bills have helped the exchequer save Rs 10 crore during 2006-07 from the funds allocated for their travelling.
About Rs 2.38 crore remained unutilised "due to less tours undertaken by the Cabinet Ministers and non-finalisation of bills by Air India in respect of foreign tours undertaken by the Prime Minister," observed the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in its latest report on the Appropriation Accounts for 2006-07.
The ministers of state too have toured less, leading to saving of tax payers' money.
According to the CAG report, about Rs 7.74 crore remained unutilised on account of "less claims (for tour expenses) from the Ministry of External Affairs and less tours undertaken by the State Ministers."
The government had earmarked, including the amount authorised through the supplementary demands for grants, a total of Rs 70.83 crore for tours of cabinet ministers and Rs 21.63 crore for ministers of states during 2006-07.
