Edible oils, vanaspati get cheaper in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Retail Prices of majority of food items remained unchanged in the national capital while edible oils have become cheaper during the first 10 days of the current month following government's price control measures.

In Delhi, the prices of mustard oil have declined by Rs 4 at Rs 73 a kg as on April 11, against Rs 77 as on April 1. Vanaspati, onion and potato rates eased by Re 1 each, according to the government data.

Mumbai, the financial capital of the country, witnessed downward trend in the prices of mustard oil, vanaspati and potato. However, groundnut oil prices surged by Rs 10 at Rs 101 a kg during the period under review.

In Chennai, retail prices of vanaspati and tur increased by Re 1 and Rs 2 a kg respectively. However, groundnut oil prices fell by Rs 2 at Rs 76 per kg.

The government has taken a slew of measures to put a lid on inflation, which has surged to 7.41 per cent for the week ended March 29. On March 31, the Cabinet Committee on Prices (CCP) scrapped customs duties on all crude edible oils and reduced the duties on refined oils. It also extended the ban on pulses exports by one more year.

In Kolkata, the retail prices of 14 essential commodities -- wheat, rice, atta, gram, tur, groundnut oil, mustard oil, vanaspati, sugar, tea, milk, onion, potato and salt -- monitored by Ministry of Consumer Affairs remained unchanged.

Among four metros, groundnut oil is available in the range of Rs 76-121 per kg, with Delhi prices ruling highest, while mustard oil is costliest in Kolkata at Rs 78 a kg.

The prices of Vanaspati are highest in Delhi and Chennai at Rs 75 a kg, while in Mumbai and Kolkata the commodity is available at Rs 65.
