Economic Survey report reflects poor status of education Delhi
With only 5000 schools and merely one lakh teachers catering to the educational needs of 34 lakh students in 2005-06, everything is not well in the schools run by the Delhi government.
Reflecting the status of education in the capital, the Economic Survey of Delhi for 2007-08 said while total number of the students enrolled in the schools has increased from 30.2 lakh in 2004-05 to 34.3 lakh the following year, the number of schools stood at 5063 in 2005-06 against 4862 in the previous year.
In Delhi, primary education has been mainly the responsibility of local bodies such as the MCD, NDMC and Delhi Cantonment Board. MCD accounts for 66 per cent of primary school enrolment.
In 2005-06, there were 2668 pre-primary and primary schools (9.99 lakh students), 645 middle schools (2.35 lakh students) and 1750 secondary or senior secondary schools (17.86 lakh students). There were 16.39 lakh girls in schools in 2005-06, accounting for 47.7 per cent of total students.
Reflecting the poor status of education, the survey said the teacher-pupil ratio is 1:44 at the secondary level while it is 1:52 in primary schools.
There were 61,149 teachers at secondary level followed by 27,431 at primary and 7,226 at middle level.
Realising this huge gap in demand and supply and need to improve infrastructure, the Delhi Government has increased allocation on education sector from Rs 809 crore to Rs 1,045 crore in this year's budget.
"Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation has been entrusted with the task for upgrading 198 schools with a total spending of Rs 250 crore," a senior government official said.
