Eco survey on where India has been spending its money in pandemic

Highlighting the increase in participation of individual investors in the equity cash segment, the Economic Survey notes that the share of individual investors in total turnover at NSE increased from 38.8% in 2019-20 to 44.7% in April-October 2021.

Highlighting the increase in participation of individual investors in the equity cash segment, the Economic Survey notes that the share of individual investors in total turnover at NSE increased from 38.8% in 2019-20 to 44.7% in April-October 2021.

Market analysts over the last two years have lauded the increased participation of retail investors in the market which occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic and due to increased accessibility. The survey notes that the substantial increase in the share of individual investors in FY21 and FY22 can be partly be ascribed to the increase in new investor registrations witnessed since February 2020.

Data shows that nearly 221 lakh individual Demat accounts were added between April and November 2021.


When it comes to the mutual funds industry, data shows that the net Assets Under Management (AUM) rose by 24.4% to Rs 37.3 lakh crore at the end of November 2021 from Rs 30.0 lakh crore at the end of November 2020. Systematic investment plans, especially have hit record highs.

In the primary markets, FY22 saw a boom in fundraising through IPOs by many new-age companies/tech start-ups/unicorns. The survey says that in April-November 2021, as much as Rs 89,066 crore was raised via 75 IPO issues, much higher than in any year in the last decade.

Contrasting this, between April-November 2020, 29 companies raised Rs 14,733 crore.

Rs 1.81 lakh crore have been raised through equity issues through diverse modes viz., public offerings, rights, QIP and preferential issues during April-November 2021.
