Country to remain self sufficient in foodgrain production
The government on Monday said the country is likely to remain self-sufficient in foodgrain production in the near future.
"The foodgrain production in the recent past has increased from 198.36 million tons during 2004-05... to 227.32 million tons during 2007-08 as per the 3rd advance estimates," Minister of State for Agriculture Kanti Lal Bhuria said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
The minister said country's per capita foodgrain production was 200.4 kg during 1970-71 and 195.3 kg during 2006-07. However, he added that the per capita production of foodgrain is estimated at 201.3 kg in 2007-08.
Bhuria said the government has launched National Food Security Mission scheme from 2007-08 Rabi season to increase production of rice, wheat and pulses.
"The scheme aims at adding production of rice by 10 million tons, wheat by 8 million tons and pulses by 2 million tons by end of 2011-12 through area increase and productivity enhancement in targeted districts," the minister said.
The government has also launched Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana with an objective to incentivise the states to increase investment in agricultural and allied sector.
