With the Centre attaching added importance to neo liberal policies taking cues from globalised economic order, India's cooperative sector received setback, he said.
However, a sustained intervention by the Left Front government in Kerala could bail out the sector to a greater extent, Vijayan said.
The Kerala government has made budgetary allocation to save some ailing cooperative units which enjoy stronger base and people's support in the state, Vijayan said after formally inaugurating the RUBCO House, the building complex of Kerala State Rubber Cooperative (RUBCO), a rubber based unit.
The RUBCO, set up in 1997, had to face series of financial crisis and resultant stagnation in the past mainly due to lack of much needed support from the government even after the rubber-based unit accomplished stipulated targets and norms, Vijayan, a former State Cooperation Minister, said.
However, RUBCO, which manufactures and exports rubber based products including furniture, cycletyre, matress and virgin coconut oil, managed to overcome the crisis partly due to government support and the Rs 5.46 crore building complex showcased the cooperative unit steady growth, Vijayan said.
State Cooperation Minister G Sudhakaran presided over the function attended among others by CPI (M) leaders E P Jayarajan and P Jayarajan.
