Consumers get some relief from high vegetable prices

For consumers facing high food prices, a decline in rates of green vegetables by 30-65 per cent during the past one month has come as a pleasant relief.

NEW DELHI: For consumers facing high food prices, a decline in rates of green vegetables by 30-65 per cent during the past one month has come as a pleasant relief.

"Earlier, all vegetables were selling over Rs 40 a kg level barring potato and onion. Now, there is some relief," Anupama Saxena of Paharganj in Delhi's central locality said.

Retail prices of green vegetables, which were ruling at very high level in March-end, have declined by 30-65 per cent in the national capital on account of increased supply.

In over a month (March 30 to May 3), the vegetable prices have dipped significantly in the organised retail too.

Tomato prices have plummeted to Rs 9.50 per kg, against Rs 18 on March 30 at a Mother Dairy outlet in central Delhi. French Beans and brinjal prices have slipped to Rs 12 each in comparison to Rs 34 and Rs 32 respectively earlier.

Bottle gourd too bears a lower price tag of Rs 8 now, against Rs 17 earlier, while ladies finger and cucumber are selling at Rs 22 and Rs 8, down from Rs 40 and Rs 24 about a month back.

However, the off-season varieties like cauliflower and Arvi have become dearer. While cauliflower rates have jumped to Rs 24 from Rs 9 in March-end, Arvi prices have shot up to Rs 32 from the previous Rs 20.

Barring onion, potato and cabbage, green vegetable prices were hovering in the range of Rs 30-40 a kg in neighbourhood market at many places here during last week of March.

Onion and potato prices have been stable at around Rs 10 per kg. Same has been the case with cabbage, selling at Rs 5 since March 30 at the Mother Dairy outlet.

Meanwhile, rise in the wholesale price-based inflation to three-and-a-half year high of 7.57 per cent for the week ended April 19 is attributed to higher prices of food articles like vegetables, rice, milk and tea.
