Clothes, phones top India’s shopping list

Expenditure on education has gone up from 45% to 57% in urban India and from 29% to 44% in rural India while expenses on healthcare have also shot up substantially.


NEW DELHI: According to a National Sample Survey Organisation study, Indians today believe in living life in style.

Another major change in consumer behaviour was found in the way India connects. Telephone expenditure per person per month has increased by a whopping 515% since 1999-2000 in rural areas and by 230% in urban areas. The deep inroads made by the mobile revolution are visible in the proportion of households incurring increased telephone expenditures, up from 5% to 32% in rural areas and from 25% to 63% in urban areas.

Expenditure on education has gone up from 45% to 57% in urban India and from 29% to 44% in rural India while expenses on healthcare have also shot up substantially.

There has been a big improvement in the quality of life too, with the number of LPG connections going up from 29.5% to 59% in urban areas and from 2% to 11.7% in rural areas. Access to power has gone up from 34% to 54% in rural areas and from 74% to 90% in urban areas.

Consumerism, as defined by the urge to gather gadgets, is also well and truly here. About 26% of all households in rural India now boast TV sets while the corresponding figure is 66% in urban India. Refrigerators are found in 4% of rural and 32% of urban households, up from 1% and 12% respectively.

The survey reveals that 38% of rural homes and 82% of urban households have electric fans, showing an increase of 12-13 percentage points in each sector in 1999-2000 .

The demand for cars and motor bikes has also seen substantial increases over 11 years. About 4.6% of urban households owned motor cars in 2004- ’05 as compared to 1.2% in 1993- ’94 while the figure for rural households went up from 0.2% to 0.8%. One-fourth of all urban households possess a two-wheeler , up from the earlier one-eighth , while 7.7% of rural households own twowheelers as against the earlier 2%.
