Ashok Chawla appointed as Finance Secretary

The government on Tuesday designated the department of economic affairs secretary Ashok Chawla as the finance secretary, the first among equals in the finance ministry.

NEW DELHI: The government on Tuesday designated the department of economic affairs secretary Ashok Chawla as the finance secretary, the first among equals in the finance ministry. Finance ministry has five secretaries heading different departments.

Mr Chawla, the senior most in the ministry, was designated as the finance secretary after his predecessor Arun Ramanathan retired last Thursday. The government has also appointed G C Chaturvedi, serving an additional secretary in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, as additional secretary in-charge of the financial services department.

The finance ministry spokesperson confirmed the development and said that a statement about the new appointments in the ministry will be issued later on Tuesday. The finance ministry has five departments, the economic affairs department, revenue department, expenditure department, financial services department and disinvestment department.
