Around 39 pc leakage in PDS system: Chidambaram
Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Friday said there had been a 39 percent leakage in the public distribution system.
The Centre's responsibility was restricted to providing good prices to farmers while it was the state's responsibility to control leakage in the PDS system, he said.
The centre could not be blamed for the leakage and the foodgrains not reaching those it was intended for.
"My job is to give good price to the farmers, procure enough food grains and give it to the states. My responsibility stops here and the state's responsibility begins. They have to make sure food grains goes to the PDS shops without any leakage", he said.
If 39 percent is lost, how could the central fovernment be responsible for it, he asked.
Speaking at a function organised by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry, he said under the UPA an average of 300 lakh tonnes of food grains were allocated under the PDS annually.
Under the NDA government the highest offtake was 239 lakh tonnes, he said.
However, despite additional allocation nearly 39 percent gets leaked, he said.
