ROURKELA: The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) on Tuesday demanded multiple tax cuts to rein in unprecedented hike of petroleum products which he said would have a cascading effect on the prices of essential commodities and services.

The UPA Government should explore alternative revenue avenues to compensate for the loss after cutting the taxes instead of putting extra burden on the common people, AITUC President Gaya Singh told reporters here.

He said a joint meeting of the left parties had decided to put pressure on the Union Government on the oil prices issue and launch country-wide agitation.

Singh also criticised the State Government for its failure to check irregularities in public distribution system, which resulted in creating artificial scarcity.

Besides, the former MP also resented delay in kicking off the modernisation and expansion plans of Steel Authorities of India Ltd (SAIL).
