Net direct tax collections up 23%
The last date for filing income-tax returns for salaried individuals for the financial year 2025-26 was July 31.
Net corporate tax collections climbed to ₹2.70 lakh crore from ₹2.26 lakh crore, up 19.83% against the same period last year.
Securities transaction tax also delivered a strong showing with collections rising to ₹33,823.74 crore from ₹22,354.31 crore, up 51%.

The collection is expected to surge further with August 31 being the deadline for filing ITRs for businesses and professionals who do not need a tax audit.
"Despite the global headwinds, tax collections remain buoyant. However, a better picture will emerge after the advance tax numbers for the second quarter due on September 15," a senior official said.
Gross direct tax collections rose 19.75% to ₹9.55 lakh crore, compared with ₹7.97 lakh crore a year earlier. Refunds, meanwhile, increased just 3.79% to ₹1.43 lakh crore, helping net collections grow faster than the gross kitty.
