US Supreme Court strikes down Trump tariffs; India says studying implications closely

India is closely examining the implications of a major ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States that struck down President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs.In a 6–3 decision, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that Trump exceeded his authority by invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose sweeping import duties.Within hours, Trump announced a new 10% global tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, effective February 24.India’s Commerce Ministry said it is studying the developments carefully. The ruling comes after a volatile phase in India–US trade ties, including a 50% tariff on Indian goods that was later reduced under an interim trade agreement.
