Tirupur Exporters' body wants probe against NGOs

COIMBATORE: In the backdrop of some European NGOs alleging Indian garment companies of violating human rights, Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA) today urged the Centre to probe the sources of funds received by some organisations working in Tirupur.

In a statement, TEA president, A Shaktivel said Commerce Minister Kamal Nath had written to EU trade commissioner, Peter Mandelson and the Dutch Foreign Minister to counter the NGOs' 'malicious campaign' against garment exporters in India.

"Few organisations in Tirupur are also doing such a malafide campaign against the Tirupur export garment units and thereby affecting the economy," he added.

He also requested Kamal Nath to take necessary steps to probe the sources of the fund received from abroad and its utilisation by these NGOs in Tirupur.

The letter informed that "such motivated campaign" would invite pressure on the government to restrict imports from EU, Shaktivel said.

The minister's strong support and help would certainly increase the morale of the exporters and boost their competitiveness, he said.
