Union Government will take initiatives to step up banana exports from India, the world's largest producer of the fruit, said Union Minister of State for Commerce Jayaram Ramesh.

TIRUCHIRAPALLI: Union Government will take initiatives to step up banana exports from India, the world's largest producer of the fruit, said Union Minister of State for Commerce Jayaram Ramesh.

He was delivering the valedictory address at the four-day national conference here by National Research Centre for Banana(NRCB), in colloboration with Banana Growers Federation (BGF) and Association for the Improvement in Production and Utilisation of Banana(AIPUB).

India, which produced 17 million tonnes of the fruit per annum, had grey areas like inadequate infrastructure facilities.

Export promotion activities would not only lead to foreign exchange earnings but also to massive employment opportunities across the country, he said.
